In the United States, over 700 women a year die of complications related to pregnancy, one of the highest maternal death rates in the developed world.
And those numbers continue to climb.
Childbirth complications don’t discriminate. It can kill women of every race and ethnicity, education, and income level, in every part of the U.S.
But it is Black and nonwhite women that have almost three times the risk of death from hemorrhage than white women.
In 2016, Aliette Silva nearly became one of those women.
With vivid recollection, Aliette Silva recounts the day she nearly died during childbirth, how her near-death experience significantly impacted her life, and why it’s vital for women to endlessly advocate for their health.
